Black and blue

I spent this past weekend in Arizona looking at apartments. The good news is, I found an amazing one, and therefore won't be homeless in about a month. The bad news is, it turns out moving is expensive. I also don't own a stick of furniture so it'll definitely be interesting until I start getting regular paychecks.

Any tips from those of you already living in the real world? I've been checking out Ikea and Craigslist some so far (I never wanted to leave the Ikea we went in this weekend).

  1. Yea!  We are going to be Arizona buddies :)  I definitely recommend Craigslist, Goodwill (half price every other Saturday here in the Phoenix area), and Savers.  You can get some surprisingly high quality stuff and you can always paint it if it is not the color you want.  Ikea stuff is SO cute!  Sadly, as somebody who bought ONLY Ikea furniture when I got married, some of the furniture doesn't last very long.

On another note.  VERY cute skirt and I am loving the blue on blue :)

  2. Moving is crazy expensive (I just moved from Chicago to San Francisco). My advice is to go cheap on the stuff that doesn't matter (book cases, coffee table) and spend most of your furniture budget on your bed and your couch. How well you sleep affects your whole day, and you and your friends will spend a lot of time hanging out on the couch. A well-made couch and bed will last for YEARS and are a good investment. I love my Temperpedic bed. As for couches, a sectional will let you move around the pieces no matter what shape your apartment is.

    Good luck!

  3. Craigslist is always a good place to start. I live in a college town and there are a lot of people who leave their unwanted furniture out by the sidewalk. Furniture at vintage stores are also cheaper, but probably not as cheap as you would expect. Have you looked at places like Habitat for Humanity?

  6. You should definitely check out the garage sales too. But go early before the old ladies beat you to the good deals!
On a different note, I love the black accents with the blue--it gives this look a little edge!

  7. If at all possible, find friends who will help you move instead of paying the professionals (they will charge you an arm and a leg!) For furniture I love Ikea and antique markets for interesting accent pieces.  Love this look on you- very crisp

  8. yay for a new apartment! good luck with the moving. craigslist is definitely helpful for furniture...there are also people giving away free furniture on there. garage sales are also awesome. i live near a bunch of college kids and people always get rid of their furniture when they move out at the end of the year, so i've gotten lucky there too...

  9. I have been on royal blue kick lately! I love your accessories. Congrats on finding an apartment, that's one less thing to stress about in your move. I have found success on craigslist, but things go very, very quickly on there. My husband and I spent months vigilantly looking for a specific type of couch (that would be practical in a small space and with a two-year old) and would often call on posts only to find that the owner sold it within 20 minutes. INSANE! I have also had much success at thrift stores. Let us know what you find! That would be fun to see. Van // The Clothes We Wear // Wearing motherhood with style.

  10. From my experience, I think it works out better if you don't worry about getting a lot of stuff all at once right after you move.  I've found that people get rid of things a lot and will even just give them to you when they hear that you're looking for something.  I've lived in my house for over a year.  We started out with just a bed...everything else was given to us, chairs, tables, etc.  We eventually did save some money to buy a nice couch because we couldn't find a good used one.  Then, as you save up money and want to replace the hand me downs, you can.  Hope all goes well!!

  11. Yard sales are always good places to find good deals on furniture. The people are usually very motivated to sell and if you have cash in hand they'll usually sell it to you for a steal! Good luck moving!

  12. Love that look...it almost looks like a dress!  And yard sales are your best friend when it comes to furnishing an apartment.
